You & Your Dog

Lockdown activities for you and your dog

Due to new lockdown restrictions most of us are stuck in the house all day. For dog owners it can be a real task keeping their dog entertained all day. Here are a few ideas of what you can do during lockdown.

Take the time to train

Most of us now have more time on our hands than we know what to do with. From puppy’s learning basic training to older dogs learning clever tricks, all dogs can benefit from some training. A lot of dog owners may avoid training as it can take up a lot of time and their schedule can not fit this in. however, due to current lockdown restrictions, many of us now have a lot of time on our hands. Use this time to focus on your dog and improving their skills, whether it be basic toilet training for your new puppy or complex tricks for your older dog. As well as improving skills this will help stimulate their mind, keeping them occupied and more importantly out of trouble.

Try something new

As well as keeping your dog entertained, I’m sure you are looking for something to do. Why not try something new with your dog to keep you and the whole family occupied. Hide n seek is a great simple game that will keep your pup entertained for hours. One member of the family starts off by hiding in plain sight, getting harder as the game goes on. You could even hide different trets around the house for your dog to sniff out during the day.

One thing we can do is exercise, especially if you have a dog that needs it. Try to find new places for your daily walks, ensuring their canine friendly. This gives both you and the dog some fresh air and exercise and will also benefit towards your mental health. You never know, you might find your new favourite spot.

Get creative

Get creative and make some homemade toys. As well as keeping your dog entertained with something new and different, you will have a lot of fun making them. This will also help you save money on expensive shop bought toys. Try using items like plastic bottles and cardboard tubes to hide food and treats inside.  Make sure to observe them while they play to make sure they don’t eat anything they’re not supposed to.

This is a great time to have some bonding moments with your dog. More than likely, we will never have this much time at home again so enjoy it. Dog’s only have you to play and spend time with, so make them happy by giving them attention. Give them cuddles, grooms or just talk to them. This will be the highlight of their day!
